MB Sprinter: Made in the USA?

THE SPRINTER CARGO VAN HAS BEEN SOLD IN THE US FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW AND WAS ONE OF THE EARLY EUROPEAN STYLE VANS ON THE MARKET.

Now that Ford has started to replace the Econoline series van with the new Transit van and with the introduction of the Ram ProMaster last year, Mercedes Benz suddenly has a lot more competition.

Where the Sprinter is partially built in Germany and then finished in their U.S. factory, the additional transportation and building cost very likely weighs down their profit margin in comparison to the ProMaster and the Transit, that are built in North America.

General specifications and retail pricing are almost identical when you compare the similar models, but the MB Sprinter doesn’t come with a gas engine, while the others do. And as the use of diesel in the United States is still very limited, Mercedes Benz stands to loose market share with the Sprinter if they cannot compete on price.

Now, and responding to the competition, Mercedes Benz has announced that they are evaluating to build future Sprinter models in the U.S. or Mexico. When is still unclear, but increased competitiveness will hold prices down, while Ford, Chrysler and Mercedes Benz fight for market share.
