WITH MORE THAN 25,000 ANCESTRAL PUEBLO SITES, ROCKY MOUNTAIN VIEWS, ADOBE COMMUNITIES, ROSWELL’S UFOS AND THE TRINITY SITE, WHERE THE FIRST ATOMIC BOMB WAS DETONATED, NEW MEXICO HAS MUCH TO OFFER.
Annual passes are an affordable way to enter New Mexico state parks. In addition to day-use passes, their annual camping passes are a good option if you are a regular or extended visitor.
State parks accept your dog when you keep him on a 10-foot leash and properly dispose of his droppings. There’s even more freedom for your pet on BLM lands in addition to dispersed camping (boondocking).
New Mexico’s higher elevations can affect your pet as much as you. Both of you should acclimate to the new altitude, before exploring the hiking trails and remember, the weather in northern New Mexico can vary by the hour with snow as late as May.
A few of my favorite pet friendly destinations with outstanding hikes and often cheap or free places to stay for a few nights. Click on the map or below.
