Butler Wash Ruins Overview
Tourist Ruins
Follow the signed trail of less than 1 mi. round trip. The trail ends at an overlook where you can see several ruins down below. Walk 200 ft. along the rim to the north to a small natural bridge.
The view from the observation area is sufficient for most people, but for others, there is an opportunity to enter these cliff dwellings. To do so, first go further upstream to find an easier way down towards the bottom of the wash. Find your way through the canyon to the ruins. Look in the direction of the observation point and you’ll see a small natural bridge. Then search for a place with a short, but steep climb up the ledge and then an easy walk to the ruins.
Do not attempt this climb to this dwelling, if your accompanied by your pooch. This cultural heritage is no place for pets. Try to preserve and leave no trace!
Target Ruins, Ballroom Cave & Other Ruins
Follow the trail north into Butler Wash and keep left. Go 3/4 mi. and keep left to Target Ruin. The alcove on the south is easily accessed and has a good view of Target Ruins.
Hike back to Butler Wash and continue upstream. Approx. 1/2 mi. you will find Ballroom Cave on the left side of the trail. When you enter the site, a large cave area is exposed. Continue upstream 250 yards to the third ruins and another 300 yards to the last ruin. A flashlight is suggested for viewing the ruins at the back of Ballroom Cave.
