My 2016 Ford Transit Recall

Recently, I received a recall notice from Ford: my 2016 Transit cargo van needed some preventive maintenance. Apparently, the electronic throttle body could develop contamination, resulting in activation of the service engine soon indicator and reduction of engine power and vehicle speed.

01-ford-service-departmentA few days ago, I scheduled the repair at my local Ford dealer and today I went in to drop off the van with the expectation to return at the end of the day. The anticipated half-a-day job would only be a 1½ hour wait, but I still decided to return home, based on previous experience.
Yet before I could leave, I noticed my van being moved to the repair shop and just a few minutes later the work commenced.

As the vehicle was still parked at the entrance of the shop, I casually walked over and talked to the mechanic, while he was replacing the throttle body, which took him less than 10 minutes.

The NHTSA doesn’t show this repair on its recall list, possibly because Ford regards this as part of its Customer Satisfaction Program. The recall is also applicable to the 2016 Ford Fusion.

These throttle problems are very common with Ford vehicles and the government is aware of that. In 2013, the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into sudden surges and power loss in Ford engines. Ford refused to call it a recall. NHTSA won’t either. At that time it covered the 2009-2013 Ford Escape, Ford Fusion, Mercury Mariner and Mercury Milan. Later, Ford agreed to a “Customer Satisfaction Program” that extended the ETB warranty to 10 years or 150,000 miles for certain vehicles.

  1. Did you get the notice from your dealer or Ford?
We own a 2016 similar to yours and we did not get any notice.

Do you have a copy of your notice letter so we can show it to our dealer?

    1. The recall was issued by Ford and the actual repair only took 15 minutes to complete. They replaced the throttle housing, which is located at the very top/center/front of the van under the hood.
I emailed you a copy of the letter. Let me know, how it works out.

          1. Hey there! Stuck in Kamloops BC as throttle gunned itself yesterday twice while going over the mountains. Waiting for Ford dealership to open. Have 2016 Transit converting into simple camper. Could you email me the recall as well?

          2. Hey Katie!

Great place to be stuck, as long as the temperatures hold up 🙂
Have emailed a copy of the recall letter. Wish you good luck and happy travels.

PS. Would love to hear more about your conversion!

  2. I had a problem with loss of power and what sounded like metal cracking. Wrench light came on and engine went into limp mode. Took it to dealer and they couldn’t find anything wrong. Reset the computer. Personally think it may be throttle body controller and the noise was the interior nylon gears grinding/skipping. Would appreciate a copy of your letter to go to the dealer with.

    1. Hi Bob:
For me it has been a preventative measure, as I did not have any issues with the van at that time. I’ve had no issues since then.
Sent you a copy of the recall letter by email.
      Wish you good luck!

  3. Van,
I had the wrong one. This one specifies the 2016 Transits assembled in Kansas City September 1, 2015 through May 21, 2016.
“Owner letter mailing began the week of October 10, 2016, and is expected to be completed the week of October 31, 2016. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.”

  4. I am having so electrical issues and the van not starting. Dealer has replaced fuel pump co trial module twice now and I keep telling them it is not that. Is there any way you could send me a copy of that letter you received so I can bring that to them to take a look at that.

  5. Just started experiencing lack of power in my 2016 ford transit. Check engine came on with P0882 error code “TCM Power Input Signal Low”. Could be related to the throttle body as well. Can you send me a copy of the email please? Thanks so much for sending out all of these emails to everyone!
