Installing A Cable Gland

Now that the solar panels are installed and roof wiring added, it’s time for the cable gland to lead the MC4 cabling into the interior of the vehicle.

While black cable glands are readily available, I ordered the wrong color and had to paint it to remain somewhat stealthy. I used a primer before applying the black paint, that I used before on the flange of the roof vent. After a couple of coats, it was time to add 3M VHB 5952 tape to the gland.

I drilled two holes in the roof of the Ford Transit, one for each of the two wires coming from the flexible solar panels. Before continuing, I paint the exposed metal to prevent rust and add grommets to protect the wires.

A 8 AWG MC4 extension cable is cut in half and both ends are inserted in the holes on their way to the controller. The gland with the VHB tape is pressed onto the roof and left to cure. A bit of Dicor, self-leveling sealant is applied for a watertight connection.
